'Europe remains committed': Commissioner Síkela announces 'new approach' in global health initiative

François Picard is pleased to welcome Jozef Síkela, European Commissioner for International Partnerships. According to Commissioner Síkela, global health stands at a crossroads. The lessons of COVID-19 have made clear that pandemics are not isolated crises but systemic shocks with profound economic and social consequences. Today, we face a convergence of pressures: climate change sparking new diseases, declining global health funding, and fragmented governance structures. He argues that prevention must replace reaction as the organizing principle of global health.

Europe’s role, therefore, is to sustain a multilateral, science-driven approach while adapting to diminishing resources. This requires rethinking the global health architecture, strengthening country-led systems, investing in regional resilience, and fostering equitable partnerships, particularly with Africa, that integrate health, economic development, and stability. Ultimately, global health security is inseparable from global stability. We are reminded that diseases cross borders, and so must our solutions.
