Donald Trump has said he would like to lose some weight, but that the diet would have to wait until after Thanksgiving. The US President made his comments at the White House during a ceremony in which he pardoned two turkeys.

It comes after Trump sparked health fears when a new video appeared to show the US president struggling to walk. At a press conference in the White House, the US President referred to his weight, saying he'd "like to lose a few pounds too".

However, he insisted he was going to enjoy the Thanksgiving holiday to the full before embarking on any weight loss programme.

"I can tell you that, because I'm going to have a turkey, but it's not going to be that one," he said.

Turkey's Waddle and Gobble will now return to North Carolina, having avoided the chop for Thanksgiving. The turkeys spent the night at a luxury hotel before making the journey to 1450 Pennsylvania Avenue to meet America's most powerful man.

The tradition of presenting a turkey to the president dates back to 1947, when the National Turkey Federation first gifted a Thanksgiving bird to President Harry Truman.

The practice of granting an official pardon, though, was only formalised under President George H.W. Bush in 1989.

The Republican leader has lost a significant amount of weight since he was President in 2020, according to a medical checkup in April.

Trump was 20 pounds lighter since a previous checkup as president in 2020 showed him bordering on obesity. He reportedly weighed 224 at the physical examination, down from 244 at the last time more than four years ago.

His BMI, or body mass index, which is a measure of a person's weight relative to height, was down to 28.0, which dropped Trump to the category of overweight.

The president’s BMI came in at 30.5 in 2020, which pushed him just over the edge into the category of obesity.

The April medical report confirmed that the USPresident was fully fit” to serve as commander in chief as the White House.

His doctor, Navy Captain Sean Barbabella, wrote that an “active lifestyle continues to contribute significantly” to the Republican president’s well-being.
