Donald Trump warned Elon Musk he'll pay "very serious consequences" should he decide to fund Democratic candidates to run against Republicans backing the US President's tax legislation. Speaking to NBC News, President Trump declined to share what those consequences would look like, yet gave a firm “no” when asked if he had any desire to repair his relationship with Mr Musk.
Mr Trump added that he has “no intention of speaking to him”, accusing the billionaire of being “disrespectful to the office of the President.” He told the news channel: “I think it’s a very bad thing, because he’s very disrespectful. You could not disrespect the office of the President.” The US leader’s comments follow an online social media spat between the pair, which saw Mr Musk call for an impeachment of the president.
Following the tech-tycoon’s departure from the White House last month, tensions have been high with Mr Musk heavily criticising the ‘big beautiful bill’ which will finance the federal government.
The fallout led to a series of accusations and insults across X and Truth Social, with the latter’s owner threatening to cut Mr Musk’s government contracts.
“I’d be allowed to do that,” he later told NBC, “but I have, I haven’t given it any thought.”
In response, the billionaire claimed, without providing evidence, that Trump's administration hasn't released all the records related to sex offender Jeffrey Epstein because Trump is mentioned in them.
However, President Trump said on Saturday that this was “old news” which has “been talked about for years”. ““Even Epstein’s lawyer said I had nothing to do with it,” he added.
The feud erupted less than a week after the pair appeared together at the White House to mark Mr Musk’s departure from his role in the U.S. government. The president presented him with a symbolic golden key to thank him for his work.
Despite airing his frustrations surrounding the ‘big beautiful bill’, Mr Trump initially stayed silent before hitting back on Thursday in the Oval Office, expressing his "great disappointment in Musk."
Mr Musk immediately retaliated on social media, which is when the rift rapidly unfolded.
It appears that the argument took a financial toll on the Tesla boss, who saw his company’s stock take a huge nosedive of over 10% following Mr Trump’s comments.
The US President has since also claimed on social media that he had asked Mr Musk to leave, stating that "Elon was 'wearing thin,' I asked him to leave."
However, Musk's government employment status ultimately led to his departure.
