A huge train crash near Copenhagen in Denmark has left multiple people injured as emergency services rush to the scene. The collision occurred at about 6.30am near Hillerod, about 35 kilometres (22 miles) north of Copenhagen. It was not immediately clear how many people were injured.

Photos from the scene show the front ends of the trains smashed, though both remained upright on the tracks. Gribskov Mayor Trine Egetved, in a post on Facebook, said some of the injured were flown to the hospital. She said the crash occurred on a local rail line that's used by many Gribskov residents, employees and schoolchildren.

17 injured, four critical

17 people have reportedly been injured, with four in critical condition, following the head-on collision between two local trains near Hillerod.

Emergency crews worked urgently at the scene to extract passengers from the mangled wreckage and transport the most severely hurt to nearby hospitals.

The high number of casualties has left the local community in shock.

While all individuals have now been accounted for, the focus remains on the recovery of the victims and the gravity of their physical trauma.

'I am deeply shaken'

In her Facebook post, Mayor Trine Etveged said: " This morning at 06.30 two trains on our local rail have collided on the stretch Helsinge-Hillerød around Hillerød (By Isterødvejen). At the moment, it says that there are many injured, some of which are critical, and they have been flown to the National Hospital.

"I am deeply shaken and shocked and my thoughts are with all those involved The local track is used by many Gribskov citizens, employees and pupils. Emergency services are working at full pressure, and we are trying from the central team to get an overview of what has happened more accurately and make sure that everyone gets the help they need."

Hillerod is a central city in Denmark, located about 30 kilometres north of Copenhagen.

It functions as the administrative hub for the Capital Region and sits inland, away from the coast.

The town's layout is physically dominated by the presence of Frederiksborg Castle and its surrounding lake.
