Italy's staunch anti-migration Deputy Prime Minister has called for the migrants who held a man down and forced him to watch as they raped his 18-year-old fiancée to be chemically castrated. Matteo Salvini, from the right-wing populist Lega per Salvini Premier party, took to social media after horror spread across the country after the incident was revealed by police.

"On the very day to highlight violence against women terrible news reaches us," he wrote on X.

"We propose the chemical castration to stop rapist and paedophiles, and our proposal is also ready before Parliament."

The victim was parked in a secluded park in the eastern Rome suburb of Tor Tre Teste with her 24-year-old fiancé when they were surrounded by a gang of five - all described as North African migrants - who smashed their way into the car using a bottle. In the past, the park was a popular area for couples, but it has recently become a no-go area due to drug smuggling.

The man attempted to fight off the attackers, begging them to leave his partner alone. However, she was dragged from the vehicle and raped while her fiancé was held back and forced to watch. The attack occurred in the early hours of October 25, but police have kept details of the ordeal under wraps as they tried to find the gang responsible.

On Tuesday morning (November 25), three people - all Moroccan - were arrested. The hunt for at least two others is still ongoing. Two of the three were held in the Rome suburb of Quarticciolo, while the third was arrested 350 miles away in Verona, northern Italy. DNA samples of one of the three did not match, but he was still being held in custody. Police said fingerprints found at the scene matched one of those arrested, adding that they were "hopeful" about catching all five gang members.

"This was a particularly shocking crime and the level of violence used against the couple was terrifying," a police source in Rome said.

"The car window was smashed with a bottle, and the gang grabbed the woman's phone as she screamed for them not to take it.

"The boyfriend tried to stop what was happening but the attackers then dragged the women from the car and attacked her while he boyfriend looked on."

"Enough is enough, we are no longer citizens of our own city, our own country," furious locals have told local media.

One man said: "I don't let my daughter walk the dog their on her own, I will always go with her and she is 18 years old. There are no working street lights and it's just been allowed to run down and gangs have taken over. We don't feel safe."

Italy has seen a significant increase in migrant arrivals in the last year, largely attributed to an increase in boats departing from Libya. Historically, the largest groups of foreigners have come from Romania, Morocco, Albania and Ukraine, but there have also been recent surges in arrivals from Bangladesh and Pakistan. According to the IRC, as of October 25, approximately 40,000 migrants had arrived in Italy by sea.
