At least five people have been killed and 16 others injured following an explosion in central Damascus, according to the Syrian Ministry of Health. A huge blast occurred near the Palace of Justice, inside a cafe on Al-Nasser Street in the Al-Marjah district, at approximately 3.24pm local time, according to state news agency SANA.

The ⁠nature of ⁠the blast ⁠was ⁠not immediately clear. According to the latest information from the scene, the nearby Palace of Justice was not damaged by the blast.

The blast was reportedly caused by an improvised explosive device.

The state news agency also said authorities have launched an investigation and the area has been cordoned off.

The explosion took place near Damascus' Hejaz Railway and the Palace of Justice, and Al Jazeera added there were "numerous injuries".
