A British woman has died and her husband is fighting for his life after a car crashed into a bakery in a popular Greek holiday destination. The couple were reportedly sitting outside the bakery in Tigaki, on the island of Kos, when a large SUV suddenly ploughed through the glass storefront and struck them.

Local reports say the driver had just finished work and was turning towards the bakery when he lost control of the vehicle. According to local news outlet Mega, the car smashed through the front window and dragged the couple along with it.

Emergency services rushed to the scene and took all three people, including the driver, to hospital.

The woman later died from her injuries, while her husband remains in critical condition. The driver is said to have suffered only minor injuries.

A worker at the bakery told local media the crash happened very quickly and that the driver was visibly distressed.

She said: “The driver was in a state of shock, clutching his head, shouting ‘what happened, what did I do?’”

The Traffic Police in Kos have launched an investigation into the crash and are expected to interview witnesses and review CCTV footage from nearby shops.

The British couple, who have not yet been named, were reportedly on holiday in the area, which is popular with tourists in the summer months.

It comes just weeks after another British holidaymaker was killed in a separate crash while walking with his wife in Goa, India.

Harish Solanki, 86, was struck by a rental car and later died in hospital. His wife Chandrakanta, 81, was also seriously injured.

The Foreign Office has not yet issued a statement about the incident in Kos.
