A British tourist is fighting for his life after he was crushed by a glass balcony that fell from a building in a Greek holiday hotspot. The unnamed 49-year-old was walking down a street with his wife on the popular island of Crete when a section of a balcony was dislodged by strong winds, according to local reports.

He suffered serious injuries in the freak accident in Hersonissos, on the island's northern coast. He was rushed to Venizelio Hospital, where he was taken straight to surgery and had his spleen removed. He then required a second urgent operation to treat his head injuries, according to the hospital's director, Kostas Dandoulakis. He also suffered an injury to his spine and remains in a critical condition.

Hersonissos is a town in the north of Crete, bordering the Mediterranean and Aegean seas. It is about 15 miles east of Heraklion and Agios Nikolaos.

Once a small harbour serving the original village (now known as Old Hersonissos), a boom in tourism saw the region develop into an impressive port town.

Local police have launched a preliminary investigation into the incident.
