A British woman is one of two people to have died after a gas canister exploded at a bar in a Spanish holiday hotspot. Another 15 people were injured when a butane gas canister exploded at the Casa Javi bar in San Pedro del Pinatar, Murcia, last Thursday (June 19).

The woman, 56, was an expat who lived in the Lo Pagan coastal resort area. She was one of two women killed in the blast. She was reportedly visiting a market when she was caught in the explosion.

Her death was confirmed today by the local town hall in a post on X. News outlet, El Español, reported the second woman was a 38-year-old Moroccan named only by the publication as Hind. She is believed to have been the owner of the bar, according to The Sun.

Both women had been fighting for their lives in hospital along with others injured in the explosion.

A Judicial Police inspection has alleged the seal on the gas cylinder had been "sabotaged", according to unconfirmed reports.

People living near the bar have said the venue had been a trouble spot.

One local old 20Minutos: "There were a lot of fights outside... Girls were often seen in the area."

That claim prompted speculation the venue may have also been used as a brothel.

What caused the explosion has not yet been officially determined but an investigation is reportedly underway.
