Police said she had been riding on a jet ski when she apparently "lost control" of the vehicle and "collided with a rock".

She received medical assistance but died at the scene.

The incident is being investigated by Bahamian authorities.

The victim was a dual British-Czech Republic national and at the time was a passenger on the Holland America cruiseliner Nieuw Amsterdam.

The cruiseliner firm is in contact with the woman's family and is "doing everything we can to support them during this difficult time".

The ship had docked at the private island Half Moon Cay, which is an exclusive and popular destination for Holland America passengers.

It is the seventh-day destination on the 14-day itinerary around the eastern and western Caribbean.

The cruiseliner left Fort Lauderdale on March 16, and the ship usually hosts over 2,000 guests.

The Nieuw Amsterdam continued its route and is expected to dock in Jamaica today, before it reaches ports on Grand Cayman Island, in Mexico and finally Florida.

Police arrived to the scene at the RelaxAway private beach club just after 13:00pm on Saturday after the manager of the island alerted cops.

Police revealed after their initial investigation that the 73-year-old was "riding a jet ski when she allegedly lost control and collided with a rock resulting in the accident".

They also added in a police statement: "Medical personnel rendered assistance to the victim but to no avail.

"She was pronounced deceased by the local medical doctor."

In a statement to People Magazine, Holland America confirmed the holidaymaker was travelling on its Nieuw Amsterdam ship and passed away "following a tragic incident on a personal watercraft".

The company said: "The guest, a 73-year-old woman, died on March 22 while the ship was calling at Half Moon Cay, The Bahamas.

"We are in contact with the guest's family and doing everything we can to support them during this difficult time."
