A frantic search for survivors was launched after a bridge collapsed in China. The main span of the Yuegang Bridge, still under construction, suddenly gave way on Monday.

Following the harrowing incident in Yancheng City’s Xiangshui County, two people were pulled from the wreckage, with severe injuries. They sadly later died in hospital. A desperate search involving fire, maritime and medical personnel was launched to find three other workers.

To help the search, authorities temporarily banned navigation in the Tongyu River area near the bridge, according to state Xinhua news agency.

Hours after the collapse, on Tuesday, the bodies of three people believed to be the missing workers were found, bringing the death toll to five.

A probe has now been launched to determine the cause of the disaster.

The collapsed bridge is being built to be part of the Lianyungang-Shanghai Line, designed to create a north-south water transport corridor.

This comes just months after a newly opened bridge in China's southwestern province of Sichuan also partially collapsed.

A huge dust plume could be seen rising from the site where the Hongqi bridge stood.

This collapse, which happened in November, was likely triggered by landslides from nearby mountains.
