A young boy has been made an orphan after being the sole saviour of a tragic car crash over the festive season. The head-on collision involving a suspected drink-driver happened at approximately 2am on December 20. According to the local Sheriff's Office, in Texas, America, the Contreras family were travelling home from a Christmas celebration in Fort Bend when the lives of nearly all members of the family were taken.

Lizabeth Rodriguez Contreras, 27, and Camila Peña, aged five, were declared dead at the scene, while the three-year-old boy and his dad, Diego Peña, 26, were rushed to the hospital by  air ambulance. Unfortunately, the father did not make it, though the child remains in a stable yet critical condition.

Majesti Faith Lee, 27, has been arrested by police and faces charges of intoxication manslaughter and one count of intoxication assault. The family, from Harris County, were travelling north from their Christmas celebrations when Lee was allegedly driving south in the northbound carriageway, reports the Mirror US

Officials have confirmed that alcohol is suspected of having played a role in the tragic crash, which also resulted in Lee being airlifted to the hospital. According to the press release, Lee was treated for injuries; however, they were not life-threatening. Lee's bail has been set at $1,050,000.

Sheriff Eric Fagan from Fort Bend County said: "Our hearts are with the family as they endure an unimaginable loss. This tragedy is a painful reminder of how quickly lives can be changed when impaired driving occurs, and why making responsible choices behind the wheel is so critical."

A GoFundMe campaign was set up by Lizbeth and Diego's siblings to support the orphaned child and help the grieving family with medical costs.

The page states: "Lizebeth and Diego's world revolved around their children, as was evident since their young family was inseparable.

"Diego remembers the moment his life changed when he was going to be a father. He naturally embraced being a very involved dad and took great pride in working overtime alongside Lizbeth to provide for their young family."

The fundraiser page also mentioned that Lizabeth had previously been a teacher at Metcalf Elementary School and adored being a mother to her mini-me, Camilla.

It added: "Camila had a contagious smile that would make it impossible for you to have a bad day when you were with her."

More than $90,000 has been raised of the $100,000 target.
