A female British holidaymaker has been arrested in Benidorm after reportedly strangling a woman friend from the UK with a hoover lead during a row. A friend of the pair called the emergency services around midnight to beg for help.

Police rushed round to the apartment where the argument took place but it was too late and the victim was already dead by the time they arrived. The alleged killer is said to have confessed to the murder after she was taken away from the scene by cops. Local reports said the dead woman was found with the hoover cable still round her neck.

An initial post-mortem has confirmed she was strangled. It is not yet clear when the suspect, who has not been named, will be hauled before a judge.

A spokesman for National Police, confirming the arrest, said today: “A woman aged 64 has been arrest on suspicion of killing another 66-year-old woman, both from the UK. The investigation is ongoing and at the moment we can’t give out any more information.”

The apartment where the crime happened was sealed up with police tape today. A message on the blue and white tape across the door said in Spanish: "Police line. Do not cross."

Two mobility scooters identical to the ones used by thousands of British holidaymakers and expats in the Costa Blanca resort, made famous by the likes of Madge in hit TV show Benidorm, were parked by the door to the flat.

Well-placed sources said they believed the British woman strangled used it to get around while she was in the town.

Asked for more details about the crime and the ongoing investigation after they confirmed the ages and nationalities of the two British women at the centre of the drama, a spokesman for the National Police in Alicante, which covers Benidorm, said: “We can’t give out any more information for the time being.

“It’s an ongoing investigation and therefore the National Police is not going to reveal anything else for the moment so as not to hamper that investigation.”
