Belgium has closed its airspace after drone sightings, sparking travel chaos at major airports, including the capital Brussels.
Air traffic at Brussels Airport was suspended as a security measure following the sighting shortly before 8pm, as confirmed by Belgian air traffic control authority Skeyes. Spokesperson Kurt Verwilligen said, "As a precaution, all air traffic was temporarily suspended," reports Belgian publication, RTBF. It is not yet possible to estimate how long the airport will remain closed.
Liège Airport has also reported drones and flight diversions. "All Belgian airspace is closed," announced Liège Airport spokesperson Christian Delcourt. Liège Airport has reportedly activated its internal crisis centre.
FlightRadar tracking data shows major disruption at Brussels airport.
Two flights were due to land at 7.50pm local time, and one managed to land just in time from Tenerife.
Another from Copenhagen was diverted. Every flight due to land since then was diverted to a range of locations, including Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport, Maastricht Aachen Airport in the Netherlands, and Brussels South Charleroi Airport.
Other flights are showing as "scheduled" from 9.24pm.
The first flight to appear with an "estimated" arrival time is the 9.50pm arrival from Faro.
Initially it was reported that Brussels was diverting flights to Liège, but it is believed this airport also began diverting flights to Maastricht and Cologne after drones were reported in the vicinity.
"All Belgian airspace is closed," announced Liège Airport spokesperson Christian Delcourt.
