Since Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani's government came to power three years ago following a serious political crisis, Iraq has been experiencing one of the calmest and most stable periods of the last two decades. The capital Baghdad is currently undergoing major renovation work. FRANCE 24's Marie-Charlotte Roupie reports, with Josh Vardey.

Iraq has remained relatively distant from regional conflicts, and priority has been given to the development of urban, economic and cultural projects. The capital Baghdad has been undergoing a complete transformation.

Renovation work on neglected historical and symbolic heritage sites is progressing rapidly, as is the construction of luxury apartment buildings.

But as luxury towers and boutiques start to open their doors, some 30 percent of the Iraqi population continues to live below the poverty line.
