A woman has tragically lost her life and a man has been seriously injured following a shark attack on Australia's east coast.
Emergency services were called to Crowdy Bay beach, approximately 360 kilometres (224 miles) north of Sydney, after reports emerged that a couple in their twenties had been attacked by a shark at 6.30 am local time, according to the Associated Press.
The male victim was airlifted to hospital with serious injuries, while the woman sadly died at the scene. Bystanders assisted the pair before paramedics arrived, The Mirror reports.
Police are set to consult with experts to identify the species of the shark involved. The beach at Crowdy Bay National Park has since been closed to swimmers.
The park is popular for beach camping and fishing.
In a separate incident, a man in his fifties was fatally mauled by a shark off a Sydney beach in September. Two pieces of the man's surfboard were found at the scene at Long Reef Beach.
