At least one person died and 10 others were injured after a car ploughed into a crowd in Japan. The car smashed into a crowd of around 12 people in central Tokyo before he attempted to run away from the scene. A man in his 80s walking in the street was said to have died from the impact after the incident at 12.30pm (3.30am GMT) on Monday in the city’s Adachi Ward.

Among the injured, a woman in her 20s was found unconscious and in a serious condition; she was rushed to the hospital, where she remains. After the driver fled, Tokyo Police officers managed to chase down the suspect after around 500m. He has now been arrested as the incident is continuing to be investigated as a hit and run.

According to reports by TBS, officers are investigating whether a vehicle theft from a nearby car dealership two hours before the crash are related.

The incindent happened just two hours before an eerily similar tragedy in the South Korean island of Jeju where at least two people died and 11 more were left injured after a van reportedly crashed into a crowded area in a tourism hotspot.

Local reports indicate that the driver accelerated their car into a large group of people in a popular South Korean destination filled with holidaymakers.
