Duane Mann was 22 when he met Yamaguchi in Japan in 1953. He was serving with the US Navy and she worked at a military club in Tokyo. They fell in love, planned to marry and were expecting a child. Then Mann received orders to return to the United States. He promised Peggy he would send for her. But once he reached home, the plan began to fall apart. His savings were gone, and the letters Peggy continued sending him never reached him.Mann eventually married twice and raised six children. Peggy married another man and built a family of her own.
