Air India: Full list of horror plane crashes in 2025 that have claimed 242 lives

Air India flight 171 from Ahmedabad, India, to London, UK, crashed today just moments after takeoff with 244 people on board, including 53 Brits. Air India said in a statement: "Flight AI171, operating Ahmedabad-London Gatwick, was involved in an incident today, June 12, 2025. At this moment, we are ascertaining the details." The plane was bound for London Gatwick. 

The UK government has vowed to provide all the support it can to those on the Air India flight, Commons Leader Lucy Powell said. Aviation experts Flightradar24 said the plane was just a few hundred feet above the airport when it started to rapidly go down. More information is yet to be released regarding casualties and injuries, but at least 110 are confirmed dead according to early reports. There have been a number of plane crashes in 2025 that have resulted in the deaths of passengers and/or flight crew.

5. Washington, USA, January 29 - 67 people killed when an American Airlines Flight 5342 collided with a Sikorsky UH-60 Black Hawk helicopter above the Potomac River.
6. Philadelphia, USA, January 31 - 7 people killed when a medical Learjet smashed into the ground shortly after taking off from a small airport.
7. Ampatuan, Philippines, February 6 - 4 people killed when a Beechcraft 350 King Air operated by a US defence contractor crashed.
8. Alaska, USA, February 6 - 10 people killed when a Bering Air Flight 445 went missing 10 minutes before its scheduled arrival at Nome.
9. Arizona, USA, February 10 - 1 person killed after a plane veered off the runway and crashed into a parked plane at Scottsdale Airport.
10. Florida, USA, February 14 - 1 person killed when a Cessna 208A Cargomaster crashed into a dense forest area. 
11. Arizona, USA, February 19 - 2 people killed after a mid-air collision at Marana Regional Airport involving two planes.
12. Roatán, Honduras, March 17 - 13 people killed after a plane experienced a mechanical failure a minute after take off and crashed into nearby water.

The Air India pilot cited "engine failure" in an air traffic control mayday call before crashing, according to a local source. The plane "crashed into doctors' hostel" and "within 2-3 minutes, police and other agencies reached the spot."

"Almost 70-80 % of the area has been cleaned," a senior police officer in Ahmedabad, Gujarat said.

Today's crash is the most deadly of 2025 so far with a reported 110 people dead. Before that, January 29's plane crash in Washington DC was the deadlient of the year with 67 people killed. The Bombardier CRJ700 airliner operating as American Airlines Flight 5342 collided with a United States Army Sikorsky UH-60 Black Hawk helicopter operating as Priority Air Transport 25 at an altitude of around 300 feet.
