The damage to his lungs became so severe that he required supplemental oxygen simply to stand and walk short distances. At one point, even a trip to the bathroom left him struggling for breath, and he began considering whether he might eventually need a lung transplant. For much of the past year, the San Francisco 49ers radio announcer Greg Papa's world revolved around hospital rooms, medical charts and the exhausting uncertainty of whether he would ever return to the work that had defined four decades of his life. Now, just six months after a bone marrow transplant and a series of life-threatening complications, he is preparing to step back in front of the cameras. At 63, Papa's comeback comes far earlier than doctors typically expect for patients facing a similarly complicated recovery. According to San Francisco Chronicle, Papa was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia on July 16, 2025, after the disease was discovered in his brain and spinal column.
