At least 27 people are dead after a tourist boat carrying 53 people overturned in Vietnam, it has been reported. Of the bodies recovered, there are eight children, according to the state-run Vietnam News Agency, which cited local officials.

Incliment weather, including lightning, strong winds and heavy rain were reported in the region as Storm Wipha made its way through the South China Sea. 

Local newspaper VnExpress reports that the majority of the tourists involved were from Vietnam's capital, Hanoi.

Halong Bay, which is located around 125-miles to the northeast of the city, attracts tens of thousands of visitors annually, and boat tours popular.

More than 20 individuals are still missing, according to VN Express.

Storm disrupted flights

Storm Wipha, the third typhoon to impact the South China Sea so far this year, is projected to hit land along Vietnam's northern coast eat the beginning of next week, Reuters reports.

Weather linked to the storm has disrupted air travel.

Noi Bai Airport said nine arriving flights were diverted to other airports, and three departing flights have been temporarily grounded today.

Incident happened 'near cave'

The overturn of the vessel is believed to have happened near the Dau Go Cave – one of the largest in the Ha Long Bay, CNN reports.

The popular tourist spot is a UNESCO world heritage site, and comprises of around 1,600 limestone islands and islets.

Most of the people on the affected boat are thought to have come from Hanoi.

"On the afternoon of July 19, the Wonder Sea tourist boat carrying 53 people capsized," VNExpress news site has reported.

"Vietnamese Border Guards and navy rescued 11 people and recovered 28 bodies."

The vessel is thought to have been carrying 48 passengers and five crew members when it capsized.

11 survivors found

Rescue teams found 11 survivors and recovered 27 bodies, local autorities said, eight of them children.

Reuters reports that there has been no official announcement regarding the nationality of the tourists, as emergency crews kept looking for survivors.

Most of the people involved were from the capital, Hanoi, it is thought.
