US President Donald Trump has a "cognitive deficit" and is clearly struggling due to age, a doctor and Democrat candidate for the Senate has claimed. The comments come as Mr Trump continues to face scrutiny over his mental sharpness and age, as well as a recent MRI scan.

"I'm less worried about his MRI than I am about the people in the state of Michigan who cannot afford an MRI if they really need one.

"But I will say this: if you have forgotten why you need an MRI, that itself suggests a certain cognitive deficit which we will have seen over the course of his actions in the last year, and will continue to see.

President Trump has stated that his MRI scan was conducted as part of a routine test.

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt revealed the results of Trump’s MRI scan on Monday, revealing that the President had cardiovascular and abdominal checks.

The results showed Mr Trump's heart and abdomen to be "perfectly normal".

However, Mr Trump raised eyebrows this week when he appeared to fall asleep at two separate events.

On Wednesday, he was seen with his eyes closed during a Cabinet meeting. Then, on Thursday, he appeared to fall asleep again at the signing of a peace agreement between Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
