Free schooling is under threat in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo. It is one of President Félix Tshisekedi's key policies. However, the M23 rebels have decided to introduce fees in schools in areas under their control. This has caused concern for the poorest parents.

Also, the public hearings of the judicial commission set up by the South African president to investigate explosive claims by a senior police officer linking politicians to criminal gangs began on Wednesday, weeks after the commission's delayed start.

And Benin is one of Africa's top producers of pineapples, but up to 40% of crops are wasted across the continent due to various factors ranging from delays in transporting produce to inadequate storage facilities. It's a thorny problem that has attracted the attention of a team of local tech entrepreneurs who have already achieved impressive results with their methods.
